Welcome! It’s the 8th edition of the Over-The-Shoulder quiz, and I’m glad to say it’s going as strong as ever! After some positive feedback from last weeks Egg Quiz, I got a request for some lunch and dinner follow ups.

Unfortunately, while I did attempt to put one of these together, it felt very similar to its predecessor. But, of course, I didn’t just want to abandon the idea, so I’ve tried to assemble some iconic restaurant scenes. Obviously, due to the Americana of life, most of them turned up being diners – I’ve even got a few bars in there too. Hope you enjoy, and remember, I’m open to any requests! Before we begin, here were the answers from last week:

Very sadly, Fraggle has informed me that she’s planning on abdicating her throne. We can only pray she changes her mind, but looking on the bright side, it does mean we have a chance of a new champion. Good luck!

I think I recognized Lady and the Tramp (whatever dog related dinner movies are there anyway?) and the Simpsons and Good Omens.
Apparently the movies/show I do watch don’t feature that much food 😀

    1. Three out of three! I remember there was a family of dogs eating dinner in some advert – it was extremely disturbing. I’ll try to find the link… Here it is: https://youtu.be/vhg7Xm4FXAY

      Don’t watch it.

Of course it’s The Simpsons and Good Omens. Have you watched Good Omens? Interesting to hear whether you found it offensive as a religious being, or you thought it was just light hearted fun.

        Yeah, I’m a winner! Whoohooo!

I won’t watch it. I believe in you. I’ve learned when it comes to movies/clips to take other peoples’ word for things like that 😀

I have watched Good Omens. I found it to be both honestly. So sit back and I’ll pontificate, hahaaha.
I’ve read enough Pratchett to know that he bitterly hates religion and has chosen Christianity as his whipping boy. Gaiman on the other hand, he’s so new age and whatever that I don’t think he actually believes in anything. So on that front I found it very offensive. Someone who hates what I believe and someone who doesn’t care enough that he doesn’t have a real feeling about it collaborated to make fun of it.

On the other hand, it was funny. It wasn’t any worse than most other pop-culture christianity riffs. So on that front it wasn’t very offensive.

So it depends on how serious I am feeling. I tried to re-watch Good Omens the other week and simply couldn’t.

Hope that confuses the issue 😀

        1. I may have been slightly exaggerating when I said it was “extremely disturbing”. It is dogs and a singular cat eating dinner with human hands – which is pretty freaky if you ask me. However, it does to be a surprisingly pleasant evening.

Interesting to know. I thought no one could ever be offended by Aziraphale! 😉

As long as its not that monkey baby dancing thing. Oh lord, I still have nightmares from that.

Ha. I”m actually more offended by the wishy washy angel. So much for an angelic warrior :-/

        3. It’s shocking how scarring some adverts can be. They have no regard for human life.

Ha! Yep, I see where you’re coming from. More of a Crowley man, eh? Or maybe we can just settle on the little anti-christ. He seems nice enough.

        4. Bookstooge says:

Nah, Crowley was simply way too laid back. Fallen angels know they’re going to hell and are in complete rebellion against God.
As for the anti-Christ, if he’s an actual person (and not the Catholic Church like SDA’s believe), he’ll know exactly what he’s doing. He will be infused with the spirit of Satan himself. No one can understand just what that will be like.

17 out of 21! This could be a debut win! Get back to you in a second, but that’s a very good score. You went wrong towards the end: 18, 19, 22, 23 and 24. Still: excellent!

1 – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, my sister is still mad that I got to go see this movie in the theater and she couldn’t because it was “too scary” even though she’s 4 years older than me
2 – American Psycho, this is one of those movies that everyone in my friend group loves and I don’t really care for. I mean its fine, I don’t get the fuss.
3 – I think that’s the Grand Budapest Hotel. I saw that movie, and if you asked me I would say I liked it, but I have no memory of what it was about. I saw it at the local “indy” theater which is now gone. It was actually doing okay before covid. I need to film all the now empty theaters and play the sad music from all civil war documentaries.
4 – Jonah Hill and Ice Cube were in a movie together?!
5 – No clue, looks like a real corker.
6 – Falling Down. I used to love this movie. I had it in my top 5 for a long time. Then, like happened with a few other things I like I was convinced that it’s just an okay movie that people who have personality disorders really like. And I don’t want to have a personality disorder so I like it less. That’s how things work.
7 – Don’t know, is there anyone in that shot I should recognize?
    8 – Hotel Transylvania?
9 – Pulp Fiction, they said the name of that diner in the movie but I can’t remember it. That’s going to bother me for a while. I should not have seen Pulp Fiction whatever age I was when that movie came out. I didn’t need to know about gimps.
10 – I don’t know but Adrian Brody is making a good point I hope, that’s a very powerful finger point
11 – Tootsie, I re-watched this with my girlfriend recently – it doesn’t hold up well. But should we judge things by modern standards? Yes, we should.
12 – Nashville, Ned Beatty was on Homicide Life on the Streets. I used to love that show but then someone pointed out to me how close the actors get to each other while they’re talking and now that’s all I can see.
13 – LOL, cocktail. I’m not sure I’ve ever used LOL before because I’m old and hate everything, but I did laugh. I remember when that movie came out and everyone was freaking out because it was so “scandalous” and then I saw it and was like “what is this boring shit?” Oh Tom Cruise, will you ever learn?
14 – Goodfellas. I had never seen that movie and a friend of mine LOVES that movie so I agreed that I would watch it five minutes at a time and give him my thoughts each day. I should find that and post it somewhere, it’s mildly amusing.
15 – The Godfather, which I have actually never sat down and watched, much to the horror of many. At this point I kind of take a perverse pride in not having seen it. It’s like how I never watched a Youtube video until a few years ago, once you’ve made it a certain ways you kind of want to keep it going just in principal.
    16 – Reservoir Dogs
17 – I never watched good Omens but I think this is that. I enjoyed the book but for some reason had no interest in the show.
    18 – Don’t know
19 – Oh shit, what’s the name of that John Candy movie with Dan Akroyd? It’s not Uncle Buck, it’s not Summer Rental. Ugh . . . . .
20 – Was there a live action Lady and the Tramp? Or CG or whatever you want to call it? Did that happen?
    21 – No idea
    22 – Blues Brothers
23 – Is that John Cusack? I’m going to say Hot Tub Time Machine 3
24 – Big Night, I saw this movie at the aforementioned indy theater and loved it. Then I watched it years later and was like “why did I think this was awesome?”
25 – The Simpsons, the insurance liability of serving that blowfish must be outrageous. Sure you have to sign a waiver first but we all know those things never stand up in court.

    1. Haha! I love your answers every time! Let’s see here…

      1) That is pretty cruel from your parents. Did she ever get round to watching it?
      2) Whisper it quietly, but I know a few people who agree with you…
      3) Correct! That sounds like it would win an award or two. Get some, what’s it called, y’know, those rolling balls of thorns in a desert? What are they called? Damn…
      4) They were, and it was probably terrible.
      5) A clue is that it’s a TV series, and yes, many people believe it to be a corker…
      6) That’s why we can’t have nice things.
      7) No, that one is deliberately impossible. If someone got that I’d be handing out my credit card numbers
      8) Not quite, but on the right track
      9) Everyone needs to know about gimps! They’re the backbone of our society!
      10) He’s probably a politician in another life, no doubt
      11) We agree there!
      12) Ha! That’s brilliant
      13) I don’t use LOL either. I fear for those you do. But still… Cocktail! LOL!
      14) Oh yes, please publish that! Mildly amusing is about as much as I can take right now
      15) YouTube I’ll let go. The Godfather? You’re a sinner.
      16) Correct!
      17) It’s actually quite funny. Worth a watch, as I think they’re doing a series 2 now as well.
      18) An interesting film. Won’t get it if you haven’t watched it, I’d imagine
      19) Oh, so close!
      20) Yes, unfortunately, it did. I hadn’t heard of it either till recently. Think it was 2019.
      21) Tough, so far enough
      22) Good spot
      23) It is John Cusack. It is not Hot Tub Time Machine 3.
      24) That indy theater just must have some kind of weird vibe…
      25) Of course! Never eaten blowfish since. Reading that last statement back, I sound like an absolute fool. It comes with the job.

So, you’re score? 15, I think! Very close to the win, and I reckon you would have done any other week, but this time it’s a deserved second!
